I agree, Eric. I admire the ease with which Chiara and Vlatko move between these fields, and the scientific open-mindedness with which they question familiar assumptions.

Your suggestion of bringing an agent-based account of information and communication to quantum physics and gravity also resonates with ICON, the framework I develop in Evolving Intelligence. It starts from the relation between information, computation and observer-agency across different levels of organization. I would be very interested to see where these approaches lead, and how they differ.

Good news: Vlatko and Chiara have agreed to join us for a future IAIS dialogue focused on information and life, where we can explore some of these questions.

I watched  the debate and  chatted with interest.  I played their game before with my various colleagues combining different disciplines to come up with novel solutions. So I love their methodology.

However, Their use Shannon reminded me of a review of such ideas I did years ago in the journal Science, Meaning in a Quantum Universe:

There I questioned the applicability of Shannon to areas like agent communication and developmental biology. But the critique extends further.

Now they are doing a sleight of hand and applying a distorted version of Shannon. But without significant divergence, I have my doubts .

Yet, the reductive techniques they present do diverge significantly .  As I said in the chat more generally we might be able to apply agent theory of information and communication to QM and gravity.  This would give true meaning to a quantum universe.

Still all in all, I like their juggling act.
