Dear fellow Informaticians (and Cyberneticians and Systemicians):
Many thanks for your answers / insights / feedbacks / critiques / opinions
since June 16 when I called for this topic. Especially thanks to Pedro, who
has kindly provided the first draft or outline of what is asked!
We are not doing any kind of academic debate there, since our goal is to
develop a curriculum of learning for the youngsters - note, not
researchers, not future professors, not academics who don't "DO" things
hands-on, but young leaders who will work in companies, governments, NGOs,
even restaurants and hotels, certainly AI-related start-ups - all kinds of
work fronts. How could Informatics knowledge benefit them or help them do
better in problem-solving and decision-making? That's why I ask, "Which
20% needs to be included in this curriculum/online course?
Instead of presenting the various perspectives here, please think and
organize your contribution in a different way: As soon as we start talking
about "Informatics" as a field of knowledge, (hopefully useful knowledge,)
which names do we need to mention to our students as major contributors to
the field of Informatics (besides yourself)? What are their good ideas -
and why are those ideas useful? Please try to rethink this topic from "the
customer's perspective," i.e., why should a student learn this stuff, or
how much time is worth being spent on it? What will be some "take-home"
goodies that a student could get from this curriculum?
The Oxford Project has a good "seed document" for cybernetics, starting
from answering those questions. My wish to this group of colleagues is to
come up with a similar document for Informatics, and we will later do the
same with Systematics. If you're interested in continuing this and would
like to see that one, I shall email it to you per your request. (Some of
you already have it; it is my 1993 manuscript of an introduction to
cybernetics, currently being updated.)
Thank you again for your participation, with the best regards!
Jason
