Daniel — EXCELLENT comment!
My reaction is essentially the same . . . I do not see anything in ChatGPT
that reflects 'firm critical thinking'.
Every example I have seen strikes me as 'telling me what I want to hear'
and adding some flattering comments (superficially encouraging acceptance).
I will say that ChatGPT *can* offer an interesting/possibly useful
summation/synthesis of existing views, at times perhaps *beyond* what a
well-read individual may possess, but not always. One thus needs to resist
the temptation to suspend critical thought and historical vistas.
After some 60+ years of chatbots (

advances. If one looks even deeper at the 'informatic history' supporting
all this, starting with Shannon's use of statistics . . . the 'irrational
exuberance' tied to informatic advances (democratization of information) we
see Shannon's Bandwagon essay. In references behind Shannon's work we even
find 'boasts'(?) of sending 'intelligence' via telegraph lines. Were
advances in telegraphs considered 'intelligent' in their own time?! (or
invention of written script, paper, printing presses, etc.)?! Do we not
still marvel at the invention/discovery of 'zero' as a major informatic
leap? How we feared that people 'mindlessly' listening to radio broadcasts
would become hypnotized zombies, or railroads (another informatic leap)
spreading poisonous 'vapors'? And what of today's WWW, ChatGPT, and even
the proliferation of cryptocurrencies (again, ALL informatic roles).
After the blush of 'first encounters', generation of *actual*
meaningful content (via firm critical thinking) is the only thing that
truly matters in informatic advances. Further democratization of
information is surely vital in bringing more data to more minds,
facilitating/affording further likely FUNCTIONAL advances . . . but first,
we must also learn to sort through the explosion of BS accompanying each
such advance – and we are a very looooong way from doing that.
Marcus
