[Fis] next regular fis conference vienna 2015!

dear fisers,

the discussion of a meeting in varna gives me the opportunity to remind you, and announce herewith, that in 2015 we will also have our next regular international conference on the foundations of information science. 

you remember that in the aftermath of the beijing conference in 2010 we founded an organisation for the fis community and beyond which allows us to follow a regular scheme of our fis conferences. in moscow 2013, we had the first fis conference organised by isis (the international society for information studies). as i happen to be the current president (pedro is vice-president for protocol), i'm responsible for the upcoming fis conference.

date: june 3-7, 2015

venue: vienna, vienna university of technology

the conference will be hosted by my faculty of informatics as part of the celebration of 200 years vienna university of technology.

this conference will be broad in scope but focused in the aims. thus it will be a gathering of different disciplines, schools, approaches, communities, institutions, researchers and practitioners, all of which deal with some aspect of information and it will be a platform for questioning the impact we have on society – an impact that is enabled by foundational work. 

hence the theme: "information society at the crossroads – response and responsibility of the sciences of information"

the basic idea is that tracks revolve around concrete topics that need discussion by people representing different backgrounds. that is, there will be a common effort to position ourselves against the challenges of the information age. scientists, engineers, artists, philosophers, practitioners, if not anybody affected by the implementation of findings in information are requested to have a joint discourse to reflect what we are doing. e.g., if it comes to the question of militarisation of research and development, not only computer scientists are required, but also experts in artificial intelligence, information ethics, technology assessment, economic and political matters and else.

in that context, i'm thankful for any idea and initiative of yours to comment and contribute to the event. it is up to you to shape the upcoming fis conference. that is, i call upon you to get involved as you like.

we are on the point of constructing a particular site for the conference on www.is4is.org. fyi, i attach the draft call.
