<div>Dear FIS members, dear friends from IS4SI,</div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>please allow me to forward to our discussion group a link to a symposium on <strong>Complexity Science and Theories of Self-Organisation </strong>from our peer (or at least thematically very near to IS4SI) society "Internationa Society for the Systems Sciences" (ISSS) <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.isss.org/home/__;!!D9dNQwwGXtA!Vhek3ZNaqh89XnT8yHKARBjqAe6u0ztcLYVcex_f9dZ_NVxypYjNf5PZgOf7OCBkJ0bTBvmlwXuCL8bIBKC9qg0njY6wOw$" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">https://www.isss.org/home/</a> scheduled for this Saturday.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The topic sounds really interesting and well related to topics which we have been discussing here lately, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to come a bit closer, possibly.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Best regards,</div>
<div> </div>

<div><strong>Recognising Order and Creating Order: </strong></div>
<div><strong>Epistemologies Between Complexity Science and Theories of Self-Organisation</strong></div>
<div> </div>
<div><strong>Abstract:</strong></div>
<div> </div>
<div>The purpose of this lecture is to compare the epistemological model of self-organisation with the algorithmic of complexity studies. It aims to provide a framework for discussing the epistemological dimension of second-order cybernetics and complexity research. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Complexity studies are a relatively new field of research. The concept of complexity originated in mathematics with the discovery of chaos in deterministic systems, which is closely linked to non-linearity. Hence, thermodynamics introduced the notion of complexity into the natural sciences. After the mathematical study of nonlinear dynamics, such as general systems theory and cybernetics, complexity found its applications in a wide range of fields of knowledge.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Complex systems are characterised by non-linearity, multi-agency, and self-organisation or emergence. Complexity research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the question of how order can emerge from an uncountable number of elements. They describe every type of reality as a complex organisation of interacting factors, and modelling methods are created to aid in understanding. The concept of 'knowledge of complexity' focuses on the analysis of time series patterns that reveal critical states on which the control parameters of a system depend.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In contrast, the cybernetic model of self-organization theories represents an epistemic-constructivist approach to complexity. Heinz von Foerster's theory of self-organisation provides an epistemological description of the transition from disorder to order.</div>
<div>The problem of order can be used for epistemology. It involves the problem of cognition, as cognition signifies not just perceiving order, but also creating it. Cybernetics and self-organisation were models of cognition, specifically constructivist models.</div>
